    IVF

IVF is the basic assisted reproduction technique, in which fertilization occurs in vitro (literally, in glass). The man's sperm and the woman's egg are combined in a laboratory dish, and after fertilization, the resulting embryo is then transferred to the woman's uterus.

The five basic steps in an IVF treatment cycle are super ovulation (stimulating the development of more than one egg in a cycle), egg retrieval, fertilization, embryo culture and embryo transfer.

Treatment Option

Infertility can be treated with medicine, surgery, artificial insemination, assisted reproductive technology or IVF. Many times these treatments are combined. About two-thirds of couples who are treated for infertility are able to have a baby.

In most cases infertility is treated with drugs or surgery.

Doctors recommend specific treatments for infertility based on:

  • test results

  • how long the couple has been trying to get pregnant the

  • age of both the man and woman

  • the overall health of the partners

  • preference of the partners

Tips to Manage Stress

  • Empower yourself with knowledge about the procedures and treatments you may need. After researching on the Web, write down a list of questions to take with you to your next appointment if you feel there are issues you'd like to clarify.

  • Decide in advance with whom you want to share your experience, and plan some strategies for avoiding inappropriate questions and unwanted advice from colleagues and acquaintances.

  • Know that it's common for women in the midst of treatment to experience feelings of depression or sadness, and sometimes these feelings are strongest when participating in baby or child centered functions. Don't feel guilty if you want to pass up the baby shower or child's birthday party you're invited to. Taking care of yourself and your emotional needs is the top priority now.

  • Consider taking a break every few months.

  • Write down questions to bring to your doctor, so you don't forget to ask.

  • Consider getting counseling, learning some relaxation techniques, or joining a support group. You may find yoga, meditation, guided imagery, reiki, massage therapy and/or exercise helpful. Resolve is one of several national organizations that provide information and support to families dealing with fertility issues.

Loss: You may feel a sense of loss for the child or children you imagined having one day. You may also feel that you’re missing out on the experience of parenthood or the act of having a biological child.
