  LIVER TRANSPLANT

Liver transplantation or hepatic transplantation is the replacement of a diseased liver with a healthy liver allograft. The most commonly used technique is orthotopic transplantation, in which the native liver is removed and the donor organ is placed in the same anatomic location as the original liver. Liver transplantation nowadays is a well accepted treatment option for end-stage liver disease and acute liver failure.

Your Physician may recommend a liver transplant when all other treatment options fail. The purpose is to replace your diseased liver with a healthy liverIdeally, after a transplant you will be free from disease, and lead a fairly normal life as long as the transplant functions.

Indications

Liver transplantation is potentially applicable to any acute or chronic condition resulting in irreversible liver dysfunction, provided that the recipient does not have other conditions that will preclude a successful transplant. Metastatic cancer outside liver, active drug or alcohol abuse and active septic infections are absolute contraindications. While infection with HIV was once considered an absolute contraindication, this has been changing recently. Advanced age and serious heart, pulmonary or other disease may also prevent transplantation (relative contraindications). Most liver transplants are performed for chronic liver diseases that lead to irreversible scarring of the liver, or cirrhosis of the liver.

Indications for liver transplant include:

  • Hepatitis B
  • Hepatitis C
  • Alcohol induced cirrhosis
  • Autoimmune Hepatitis
  • Acute/fulminant liver failure
  • Liver tumors

How to go about it

Donor and recipient will be required to undergo presurgical testing, week before the transplant. This includes blood tests, ECG, chest x-rays and a meeting with the anesthesiologist. Both Donor & Recipient will be admitted in the morning of the surgery.

The surgeon will notify the family when the procedure is completed. It is important that those who are suffering from any infection should postpone avoid meeting the patient. Initially, the patient will be in the ICU under Profession Medical Supervision.

When the condition of the Patient stabilizes, he/she will be transferred to a Private room where they will complete their recuperation process and learn how to care of themselves at home. The average length of stay for liver transplantation is 2 -3 weeks in the Hospital.
